Waverly Jong – Joy Luck Club Character Analysis

Jong Waverly was born on March 17th, 1951, which as a result, makes her a Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac. Waverly corresponds with this sign in many ways. She has a great memory, is very efficient in her chess playing and often escapes reality to deal with problems in her personal life. When Waverly was 9 years old, she left the house devoid of her chess playing brothers. She arrived at the park with her chess board ready to play. Upon arriving she met Lau Po, an older man who had helped mold her into the great chess player she would become.

He taught her many tricks such as The Double Attack from the East and West Shores and The Sudden Meeting of the Clan which she would imprint into the back of her mind leading her to a national championship. When Waverly was just beginning her trek into chess tournaments, she had always faced criticism from her mom who proclaimed she should be more efficient, “Win more, lose less”, she would say. Waverly, in an attempt not to disappoint her mother did what she was told.

Efficient was how she played from there on out. When Waverly plays chess, goes to sleep at night, or even fights with her mom, she has a habit of exiting reality. When she plays she is imagining a war raging between two clans, 16 soldiers on each side. When she sleeps she imagines chess. When she runs off from her mother in fear of her anger, she can only feel like a raging army is storming closer and closer preparing to overtake her while she floats up above the skies… and imagines her next move.
