The Importance of Friendship Friends have your back no matter what. They care for you and will always be there for you. Even if you are an independent person, you still want to surround yourself with good people. You want to feel happy by being around people who give off good vibes and are always there to help you. The quote ‘“But not us! An’ why? Because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why. ”’ on page 13, spoken by Lennie and directed to George seems to have a strong mood to it.
Lennie is saying that he will look after George if George will look after him. They travel together, so they don’t find themselves in trouble. It will make them both feel a little safer and it will also build their trust for each other. Because they only travel with each other, that means they have to rely on one another. Everything each one of them does affects the other. That’s why even when one gets the other in trouble, they need to stick together and forgive each other in order to continue traveling and working together in harmony.
The quote ‘“We kinda look after each other. ” He indicated Lennie with his thumb. “He ain’t bright. Hell of a good worker, though. Hell of a nice fella, but he ain’t bright. I’ve knew him for a long time. ”’ on page 32, spoken by George and directed to Slim has plenty of characterization in it. George knows that if he only lists the good things about Lennie, the guys will find out he’s dumb and won’t think much of him. But George states that Lennie works really hard so the fact that he isn’t that smart isn’t such a big deal after all.
It’s important that George chose to list mostly the good qualities about Lennie instead of the really bad ones because no one will be interested in working with someone who has bad qualities. If they are told a ton of good qualities, however, when they figure out the bad qualities, they won’t seem as bad as they would have in the beginning because the other workers will have already thought of Lennie as a good person and a hard worker. The quote ‘“I ain’t got no people,” George said. “I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone.
That ain’t no good. They don’t have no fun. After a long time they get mean. They get wantin’ to fight all the time. ”’ on page 38, spoken by George and directed to Slim expresses a lot of diction. George is saying that he doesn’t want to be like those lonely men who look for a fight all the time. George really doesn’t have anybody else but Lennie, so he wants to stay at peace with him. It breaks his heart to see those men all alone. George is thankful to have someone to tag along with and talk to.
If he didn’t have Lennie by his side, he probably would be a mean, lonely man traveling from job to job. They keep each other sane and kind-hearted since they have to put up with each other. Plus, it always feels good to have someone there to listen to you when you’re upset or just want to talk. George and Lennie love each other very much, and as friends they pledge to care for each other and always have each other’s backs. No matter what you go through, friends will always be there for you in the end. They can help you in so many ways, so it’s a good idea to keep them around.
