The company’s current state is exceptional. The company has been running for little under two years and already has become a twenty-five million dollar business. Although many of the features of the company are still underdeveloped, there are many opportunities that are forecasted for the growth and success of the company. Currently, the company houses a smaller scale limited information technology infrastructure that has been successfully maintaining the companies technology base.
The goals for the company are to expand from one floor to three floors tripling in size. The company has had a significant amount of success and is foreseen to continually grow. Nonetheless, with growth comes redesigning the company to better fit its needs. Company Background The current infrastructure of the company will not support the companies growing needs. The type of work that the company is engaged in is data collection and analytics using web based operating systems. The data that is collected can be from various sources which depicts the types of programs and software that needs to be analyzed from the type of data collected.
Data collection varies by entering narratives and other information into a database system (Rabinowitz & Fawcett, 2013). Also, mathematical or other quantitative information is used for data analysis using specialized programs. Our company is useful because with the data that is collected much of the information needs to be transcribed, coded, and organized. That is beneficial because in conjunction with our IT department, the company is better able to find new ways to collect, store, and organize data using current technologies in a time and cost-effective manner (Rabinowitz & Fawcett, 2013).
The company analyzes data using different relationships, patterns, and trends of the information collected (Rabinowitz & Fawcett, 2013). There are numerous ways that the data is analyzed using these tasks and utilizing statistical operations and other beneficial software (Rabinowitz & Fawcett, 2013). The company utilizes both qualitative and quantitative data in their analysis. Data Collection and Analysis Offshoring and Outsourcing Activities It is important in understanding data collection and analysis in the company because there are many activities that are being offshored.
For instance, there is a current study conducted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology on off shoring of data in the US is flawed (Leopold, 2006). This is important because the data that has been gathered shows that the offshoring of activities by the United States has little to no impact on jobs in the US but there are unanswered questions with the research (Leopold, 2006). The studies conducted by MIT show that specific industries will have a significant growth in jobs and the offshoring will have a great impact on employment in the US (Leopold, 2006).
The problem that is identified is the ineffective use of data collection by the US (Leopold, 2006). This company is extremely important because beneficial data is needed to ensure the growth of the employment in the US is accurately depicted (Leopold, 2006). Information Technology Specialists In addition to accurate results obtained from data collection and analysis, it is important that the right type of information technology personnel is on staff to ensure the smooth functioning of the business. Currently, the company has only four information technology personnel.
This is beneficial for the moment because the company has not yet expanded. Nonetheless, an increase in the growth of the company will require more specialized employees. For instance, the company will need to have system analysts, programmers, database administrators, project leads, system administrators, IT managers, network administrators, and help desk technicians (Norton, 2011). These specialized jobs provide the company with numerous individuals to seek help without having so few employees doing an extensive amount of work.
The systems analyst is responsible for defining, developing, configuring, and supporting computer applications (Norton, 2011). The network administrator is responsible for the oversight, management, and maintenance of computer network systems and data circuits (Norton, 2011). The project managers are responsible for the oversight of the management, support, and technical assistance on special projects (Norton, 2011). The database administrators are responsible for initial database architecture design through implementation, administration, monitoring, tuning, and backup, migration, and support (Norton, 2011).
The responsibility of the IT manager is to ensure the smooth functioning of the IT department (Norton, 2011). Lastly, the help desk technician’s responsibilities are to ensure the smooth functioning of lower level IT needs. They are responsible for the day-to-day troubleshooting of problems with the hardware and software that occur in the company’s operation (Norton, 2011). Infrastructure The company initially stared out as a small business. There are a limited number of personnel including the four information technology specialists.
In addition to the inadequate number of employees, there is a limited information technology infrastructure that was implemented initially. The operating system that is currently being used is Microsoft 8. It is affordable and convenient for the previous needs of the company. It is important that the company remain mindful about its financial state because it was not a million dollar company when it first opened. Interfaces Interfaces are important in data collection and analytics because the programs that are written to help make the use of the software more efficient utilizes interfaces.
These interfaces are important in technology because they utilize constraints and can only be implemented or extended by other interfaces (Oracle, 2013). Also, interfaces are seen quite often in software and referred to as Application Programming Interfaces (Oracle, 2013). Interfaces are important in the overall production of software and utilizing them in the workplace. Operating Systems and Analytics In addition to the operating system, the databases that are being used are Microsoft Access.
This is beneficial because it is a cost effective business tool that provides the company with all the needs to organize, sort, and store its data (Microsoft, 2013). It is easy to use and maintain without requiring an extensive amount of money for upkeep and maintenance. It is important that when the company began operation that it did not have any extensive need for a small business. Nonetheless, there are many other features of the limited information technology infrastructure that were just as important. This company foundation is based on its analytics.
The main purpose of the company is to collect and analyze data. Without the tools and databases for data collection and analysis, this company would not have been as successful (Adobe, 2013). Nonetheless, another source that is used by the company is Adobe Analytics. This tool is used because it is simple and easy to use software for data storage and collection (Adobe, 2013). The benefit of using Adobe Analytics is that it provides users with the tools for relevant data to marketers. It assists in the decision making process with its easy to use tools and tutorials (Adobe, 2013).
The company chose the tools that they would use for their business wisely because they were lacking staff and need better quality equipment and software to utilize while not overworking their employees. The current infrastructure utilized by the company consists of HP desktop computers. The company is utilizing its cost effective measures by using quality products at a lower cost to the company. The software that is being utilized is Microsoft 8 operating system using Microsoft Access database management, Adobe Analytics, and Java Interfaces.
Microsoft office tools are utilized for reports and creating spreadsheets and data files that are necessary for the company’s use. The current networking technology that is used is Verizon Fios internet for business using fiber optics for better connectivity and reliability. The company is limited on the infrastructure and do not currently use a main frame or central server. The workstations consist of desktop computers that are connected via a wireless internet connection. Also, the security is limited but currently using Norton 360 protection for all of the workstations and firewalls are set on each as well.
Conclusion In conclusion, there are many positives that are occurring in this growing company. The expansion of the company brings more jobs and employment. Also, the infrastructure that is currently being used has the opportunity to be redesigned to better suit the company’s needs. Also, there are many new technologies that may possibility becomes beneficial to the company in the future. Also, the main focus has to remain with cost-effective solutions that will benefit the company in the long run without over-extending the budget. References Adobe. (2013).
